Joost Swarte, the internationally recognized Dutch cartoonist, graphic designer and illustrator, is known for his clear line style of drawing, ligne claire. Mr. Swarte uses a combination of hand drawn lines, scanned, and then altered on the computer.
Swarte is a prolific artist and has contributed illustrations in diverse media. He is also famous for his magazine covers, including the cover of the Dutch magazine Vrij Nederland, the Belgian magazine HUMO, the Italian architecture magazine Abitare, and The New Yorker. Prints of a number of Swarte’s Humo Magazine covers appear in this exhibition.
Upon completion of the MFA program at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in May 2014, Devon Reiffer was awarded the Fellowship Prize for the visual impact and execution of her unique charcoal and gesso drawings on canvas, which focus on identity, gender, and sexual orientation issues. Devon hopes that her work will provide a gateway to raw, honest, and open conversation and will contribute to breaking down the labels and prejudices that are a result of our failure to talk about our differences.
